Avego Wins ITS America Smart Solutions Spotlight Award

Shared Transport recognized as leading ITS innovation

Last week, Avego Shared Transport was chosen by ITS America for its Smart Solution Spotlight award in recognition of its high potential for reducing America’s reliance on single-occupancy vehicle commuting.

As the leading voice for the use of smart technology to address America’s transportation challenges, ITS America's award highlights the best and most innovative use of intelligent transportation systems to address national and regional transportation challenges.

“This concept of providing real-time on-demand commuting services could play a major role in increasing interest and participation in carpooling,” said Scott Belcher, President and CEO of ITS America. “The use of intelligent transportation technology will help create a new, on-demand transportation system using wasted seat capacity in cars that are already on the road. If successful, this could result in significant improvements in traffic efficiency and the environment.”

The benefits of carpooling are clear and were emphasized recently in Europe, as stranded travelers chose to share the costs of completing their journeys by car in light of major disruptions to air travel. However, most of the time carpooling isn’t flexible enough to meet the demands of people’s busy lives.

Avego Shared Transport makes sense because it makes carpooling easy for commuters. Not only does it enable on-demand ride matching, but also electronic micropayment transactions, real-time passenger information and several safety features - everything required of a modern, efficient and sustainable transportation system.

Real-Time Passenger Information in 3 Days

Futurefleet powers RTPI for WhereCamp shuttle service

The operational benefits of real-time transit information are now widely accepted and include accurate passenger information, increased ridership, schedule adherence and minute-by-minute reporting. However, until now, such benefits have required a major capital investment and several months for deployment.

Avego’s Futurefleet technology provides all of these benefits at a fraction of the cost of legacy systems and can be deployed in just days or weeks, rather than months. An example of this is the Futurefleet-enabled shuttle service for the WhereCamp 2010 San Francisco “un-conference” at the Google campus in Mountain View, CA, earlier this month.

Just a few days before the event, the hot topic on Twitter was how attendees could get to WhereCamp without driving. Avego took up the challenge and in just 3 days put together a soup to nuts deployment of a shuttle service with reliable real-time passenger information (RTPI capabilities.

With a GPS-enabled Futurefleet mobile data terminal (MDT) installed inside 2 vans, generously provided by VPSI, the service ran between the Google campus, Caltrain in Mountain View and the San Jose Convention Center. Real-time departure boards were set-up for the 300 people attending the event.

The great success of the service demonstrates the speed and ease of deployment of Avego’s hosted real-time systems. Later this year, Avego will use its Shared Transport technology to power scheduled and ad hoc shuttle services for attendees at the ACT International Conference.
