We view the road as a river of empty seats. We believe we can maximize transportation efficiency by tapping into this existing resource, expanding the convenience and flexibility of public transportation to private vehicles running on every road.

The benefits of carpooling have been obvious for years, enabling commuters to save money and helping to reduce traffic congestion and pollution on our roads. However, a person’s transportation requirements are often spontaneous and immediate, not always compatible with rigid schedules and rosters.

With worsening traffic congestion on our roads, uncertainty of oil supplies, and global warming, there needs to be an alternative to the single-occupant vehicle that is flexible enough to be attractive to every commuter.

This is why Avego has developed a real-time ridesharing system that makes shared transport more convenient for both drivers and passengers.

By providing a marketplace for drivers to advertise their vacant seats to passengers in real time, with real-time passenger information and automated payment transaction management, we are essentially making it possible for commuters to run their private cars as buses. In this way, the transportation challenges of the 21st century can be addressed with an existing untapped resource - unused car seat capacity.

"Shared Transport"

We call this concept "shared transport", but the concept itself is not new. In a few areas of the US (such as San Francisco and Washington), commuters have somewhat spontaneously joined up to enable "casual carpooling" and "slugging", the technology-free equivalent of Avego, with great success.

There, large queues of people are quickly and efficiently loaded up into streams of private cars as they head towards high density travel corridors. Tens of thousands of people use these systems daily in these cities, with no major problems reported on these networks, even without the financial benefits, security, reliability, and convenience that Avego offers.

We recognize that it may take some time, years in many cases, for sufficient critical mass to develop in many areas. However, what can happen is an area-by-area, route-by-route bottom-up development and enlargement of the transport network.

For example, one industrial or educational campus with 5,000 commuters may elect to popularize Shared Transport. Soon, with 100 or 200 cars participating, there will be excellent critical mass and service availability for Shared Transport, many hours throughout the day.
